Born in Essen, West Germany, Katharina Fritsch first studied history and art history at the University of Münster and, in 1977, transferred to Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, she was a student of Fritz Schwegler until 1984. In 2001, Fritsch was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Münster, a post she held until 2010.
